Roots Activity Learning Center

The RALC curriculum is sound and includes performance objectives in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education. These areas are taught creatively through a black experience approach using trips, songs, games, books, videos, and computer technology.

Parents and educators can also purchase the Roots curriculum online at the Roots Bookstore.

The co-founder, Bernida Thompson, has an Ed. D. in Early and Middle Childhood Education. She taught in Ohio and Washington, D.C.'s public schools as well as classroom teacher, and assistant principal with children from Pre-Kindergarden thru 8th grade.

The school welcomes parental involvement and participation. There's an active PAC (Parent Advisory Council) and high level of interaction among teachers, parents, administration, children, and the community.

The summer program runs for eight weeks from July thru August. It is designed to reinforce language arts and math skills as well as enhance student appreciation for positive recreation activities. Fun-filled learning activities including swimming, tennis, softball, cooking, biking, hiking, nature study, arts and crafts, new games, films, and trips.

The first weekday in May is our open house each year. It is first come, first serve for vacant spaces starting at 9am. Be prepared to spend the morning, pay a $10 application fee and a non-refundable deposit of 1/2 month tuition to secure your child's space. Upon your visit, bring latest report card and standardize test scores. You will be given a tour of the school, enrollment documents, an application, and an orientation covering the parent policy handbook. To finalize enrollment, parents must attend the August "Parent Training Workshop".
